Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master in Gaithersburg, MD. The role splits between hands-on Java development and Scrum Master leadership to deliver cloud-native, real-time software in a SAFe Agile environment.

The position is hybrid (three days onsite weekly) and requires ability to obtain Public Trust clearance. You will grow the scale of microservices, drive DevSecOps, and mentor teams across multiple projects.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software development with 2+ years as Scrum Master in SAFe.
• Strong Java back-end experience with microservices.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs using Spring Boot.
• Experience with CI/CD, Git, and DevSecOps practices.
• Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance and work in a hybrid environment.

Responsibilities

Zachary Piper Solutions is seeking a Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master to support the development and modernization of mission-critical, cloud-native software systems in Gaithersburg, MD. The Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master will split responsibilities between hands-on Java software development and Scrum Master leadership, supporting Agile teams delivering real-time, safety-critical applications. This position involves developing microservices, implementing modern DevSecOps practices, and facilitating Agile delivery within a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environment. This position is hybrid, requiring three days onsite per week, and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance!

Responsibilities of the Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master:

• Spend approximately 50% of time designing, developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining production-quality Java applications and cloud-native microservices
• Spend approximately 50% of time serving as Scrum Master, facilitating Agile ceremonies, removing impediments, and driving continuous improvement
• Develop scalable microservices and RESTful APIs using Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and Spring Security
• Lead Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives
• Support SAFe activities including Program Increment (PI) Planning, system demonstrations, and inspect-and-adapt workshops
• Track team velocity, flow metrics, sprint commitments, and PI objectives to improve delivery predictability
• Collaborate with Product Owners, Release Train Engineers, software architects, and engineering teams to manage priorities, dependencies, and technical deliverables
• Develop and maintain automated unit tests using JUnit, Mockito, and related testing frameworks
• Integrate modern frontend technologies including React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
• Support software architecture, technical design reviews, peer code reviews, and application performance optimization
• Utilize Git, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps practices to support secure and efficient software delivery
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, refactoring, and automated testing
• Support integration between modern cloud-native applications and legacy enterprise systems
• Troubleshoot application issues across development, testing, and production environments
• Identify and resolve cross-team dependencies, technical blockers, and delivery risks
• Mentor junior developers and promote Agile best practices, software engineering standards, and team collaboration

Qualifications for the Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 8+ years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 6+ years of experience; equivalent professional experience may be considered
• 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production Java applications
• 2+ years of experience serving as a Scrum Master within a SAFe Agile software development environment
• Strong experience developing microservices and RESTful APIs using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and Spring Security
• Experience working with JSON, XML, XSD, and service integration technologies
• Experience developing automated unit tests using JUnit, Mockito, or similar frameworks
• Experience with frontend technologies including React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
• Strong Linux experience, including application development and troubleshooting
• Proficiency with Git version control and collaborative development workflows
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and automated software delivery
• Experience with development tools such as IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, or Visual Studio Code
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, application architecture, and secure development practices
• Experience facilitating Agile ceremonies, managing team dependencies, and driving continuous improvement
• Excellent communication, technical leadership, and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

• SAFe Scrum Master (SSM), SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification
• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or similar technologies
• Experience with hybrid cloud architectures, cloud-native platforms, and data mesh technologies
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration
• Experience with Kafka, event-driven architectures, or enterprise messaging systems
• Python programming and Linux shell scripting experience
• Experience with Ansible, YAML, and infrastructure automation
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases
• Familiarity with FedRAMP, FISMA, or similar security compliance frameworks
• Experience developing real-time, safety-critical, or highly regulated software systems
• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise software modernization initiatives

Compensation for the Senior Software Developer – Scrum Master includes:

• Salary: $155,000 - $175,000
