Job summary

Sartre Group in New York is hiring a Senior / Staff Software Engineer for AI Core Systems to build production-grade AI tooling and infrastructure. You will own on-prem data tooling, orchestration, vector search, RAG integration, and secure interfaces to OpenAI/Anthropic APIs, working with Head of AI Engineering and cross-functional stakeholders.

Candidates should have 4+ years backend experience, strong Python, a second language (Java or C++), Linux, and production cloud exposure (GCP/AWS);

Responsibilities

Role: Senior / Staff Software Engineer - AI Core Systems

Compensation: $200,000-$300,000 base + bonus

Location: NYC (Hybrid 4 days a week in-office, relocation available)

An NYC multi-strategy hedge fund is standing up a brand-new central AI engineering team. First hires. You'd be building the actual production systems, not running POCs.

What you'd do: Build internal AI tooling on top of on-prem data. Orchestration, vector search and RAG into private datasets. Wire up secure interfaces to OpenAI and Anthropic APIs. Work with the Head of AI Engineering and stakeholders across investment, compliance and ops.

Background that fits 4+ years of building backend systems. Strong Python plus a solid second language (Java or C++). Linux. GCP or AWS with things you've actually run in production.

Background is open. Startup or mid-size where you've stood systems up yourself plays well. Fund experience is helpful but not required. Interest in AI matters more than a deep AI resume.
