Job summary

Savard Group is seeking an experienced Shipfitter to read blueprints, fit and align structural steel components for ship construction and repair. You will cut, shape, and prepare steel plates using torches and grinders, and position heavy components with chain falls and jacks.

Basic tack welding is required to secure assemblies. The role requires minimum 5 years of shipfitting experience, strong layout skills, and the ability to work in a demanding shipyard environment with PPE and respirator

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of shipfitting experience REQUIRED.
• Strong blueprint reading and layout skills.
• Experience in structural steel fitting, cutting, and assembly.
• Experience using torches, grinders, chain falls, and precision measuring tools.
• Basic tack welding skills.
• Able to perform physically demanding work in a shipyard environment.
• Have basic hand tools and PPE, including gloves.
• Must pass a respirator fit test.
• Must pass a 10-panel drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and shipbuilding schematics.
• Fit, assemble, and align structural steel components for ship construction and repair.
• Cut, shape, and prepare steel plates and beams using torches, plasma cutters, and grinders.
• Position and secure heavy metal components using chain falls, hydraulic jacks, wedges, and come-alongs.
• Perform tack welding to secure structural components before final welding.
• Install and fit bulkheads, hatches, doors, decks, and equipment foundations.
• Use precision measuring tools to ensure proper alignment and structural accuracy.
• Work safely in shipyard environments, including confined spaces and vessel compartments.
• Follow shipyard safety procedures and maintain a clean work area.
