Job summary

Colonna's Shipyard in Norfolk, VA is seeking a skilled 1st Class Sheet Metal Mechanic to fabricate, install and repair sheet metal components on marine vessels. You will read blueprints, perform welding and brazing, and work onsite in a shipyard environment.

The role requires measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembling metal parts while ensuring quality and adherence to specifications. Five years of shipyard experience or an approved apprenticeship is expected.

Qualifications

• 5+ years experience as sheet metal mechanic, preferably in a marine/shipyard environment.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
• Advanced skills in sheet metal fabrication, assembly, and installation; welding and soldering proficiency.
• Must be able to lift heavy materials and work in confined spaces under challenging conditions.

Responsibilities

• Measure, cut, bend, and shape sheet metal to fabricate ducts, bulkheads, hoods, and structural elements.
• Assemble sheet metal components and install on ships or in shipyard facilities per blueprints.
• Perform welding, soldering, and brazing to join parts per industry standards.
• Modify existing structures and repair damaged parts to restore integrity.
• Inspect work to ensure compliance with project specs and quality standards.
• Maintain tools and equipment; perform routine checks and minor repairs.
• Collaborate with other trades and departments to meet schedules.
• Prioritize tasks across multiple projects and mentor other crew members.
