Job summary

Bixal is hiring a Senior Service Designer / UX Researcher to join our Developer Experience team on a federal platform engineering contract with the Department of Education's Federal Student Aid (FSA). You will map developer journeys, run sprint-cadence usability testing, and translate research into backlog items for engineers.

Located in the Washington DC metro area, this full-time role requires a portfolio and offers a 12-month base year with four 12-month options, with a salary range of

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 8+ years of experience in service design, UX research, or human-centered design.
• Proven ability to design intuitive, accessible and production-ready experiences for complex, multi-step workflows.
• Demonstrated ability translating research into prioritized backlog items and design documentation for engineers.

Responsibilities

• Map the end-to-end developer journey, identifying high-friction points in each stage.
• Plan and conduct sprint-cadence user research with engineering teams (contextual inquiry, usability testing, interviews, analytics).
• Synthesize findings into actionable insights and translate into backlog items.
• Collaborate with engineers to ensure research-backed patterns are implemented in software.
• Design accessible interfaces with regulatory and security requirements (508, WCAG 2.1).
• Contribute to a developer experience metrics dashboard and measurement framework.
