Job summary

Bixal is hiring a Senior Service Designer / UX Researcher to join our Developer Experience team on a DoE/FSA platform engineering contract. You will map the developer journey, run sprint-cadence usability tests, and translate research into backlog items for engineers.

The role requires at least eight years of experience in service design or UX research, US citizenship, and location in the Washington DC metro area with occasional travel to downtown DC.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree plus at least eight years in service design, UX research, or human-centered design.
• Proven ability to design intuitive, accessible experiences for complex, multi-step workflows.
• Experience reducing task friction, errors, and avoidable support through measurable design improvements.
• Strong capability designing responsive interfaces with engineering teams.
• Experience incorporating regulatory, accessibility, and secure interaction requirements.
• Expertise in contextual inquiry, usability testing, journey mapping, and synthesis of findings.
• Ability to translate research into prioritized backlog items, high-fidelity prototypes, and design documentation.
• Proficiency in Figma, Miro or FigJam; familiarity with documentation systems and developer tools.

Responsibilities

• Map end-to-end developer journey from access request through first production deploy.
• Plan and execute sprint-cadence user research with FSA engineering teams.
• Synthesize findings into actionable backlog items.
• Design service blueprints, interaction patterns, and user flows for developer-facing products.
• Collaborate with engineers to keep iterations within a single sprint cadence.
• Design accessible interfaces meeting 508/WCAG 2.1 requirements.
