Job summary

PKS Paving is seeking an experienced Screed Operator to manage and maintain the screed on our asphalt paving machine, ensuring proper depth, grade, crown, and mat finish. You will work closely with the Paver Operator and crew to meet safety and quality standards on DOT projects.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of screed experience, troubleshooting skills, and proficiency with CAT and Carlson screeds along with MOBA/Topcon/Leica grade control systems.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience operating asphalt paver screeds on commercial and DOT paving projects.
• Experience with CAT and Carlson screeds; ability to adapt to other makes as needed.
• Strong understanding of grades, slopes, cross-slope control, and paving electronics.
• Knowledge of MOBA, Topcon, or Leica grade control systems preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and grade sheets.
• Working knowledge of asphalt mixes, temperatures, compaction processes, and material behavior.
• Dependability, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn required.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and adjust the screed to achieve proper depth, grade, and mat consistency.
• Control slope, crown, and joint quality for a smooth pavement surface.
• Make adjustments to maintain ride quality and uniform asphalt distribution.
• Operate valves to regulate asphalt material flow rate and verify specifications.
• Assist with screed setup, extensions, gates, and sensors as needed.
• Maintain daily screed and paver maintenance, greasing, cleaning, and checking heaters.
