Job Description

Job Description:

AbbVie is looking for a talented scientist with strong expertise in protein NMR spectroscopy to join our Lake County, Illinois, Biophysics team. This scientist, using NMR spectroscopy and computational methods will play a central role in the discovery and advancement of small molecule-based therapeutics across a variety of disease areas. As an integral member of our team, you will drive projects and collaborate across various functions within our Discovery organization. The ideal candidate should have extensive hands-on experience with high-resolution NMR spectroscopy including design, set-up, troubleshooting, and interpretation of 1D, 2D, and 3D experiments along with solid understanding of spectrometer hardware. Experience with NMR-based fragment screening, including protein sample optimization, collection of 1D and 2D NMR screening data, and use of ligand-induced chemical shift perturbations and protein-ligand NOE data to dock fragments into protein binding sites would be a plus. Success in this position will require both strong collaborative skills and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement NMR experiments (1D and 2D) for evaluation of ligand binding to protein targets and for fragment screening of protein targets
  • Set-up NMR spectrometer for the collection of protein-ligand NOE data to enable ligand docking
  • Process and analyze NMR screening data and structural NOE data
  • Employ computational methods for CSP/NOE-guided docking of ligands into protein binding sites
  • Set-up and troubleshoot 1D, 2D, and 3D experiments taken from the literature
  • Prepare protein samples for NMR-based studies, including buffer optimization
  • Work with AbbVie personnel and vendors, when necessary, to maintain and repair spectrometers
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental results
  • Interact with other members of the Biophysics Drug Discovery team to evaluate where NMR methods can be most effectively employed
  • Present results at internal meetings
  • Present results at external scientific meetings as appropriate
  • Publish experimental results in peer-reviewed journals as appropriate
  • Work closely with project teams to identify and solve key questions within the domain of small molecule drug discovery

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of relevant academic or industry experience is required
  • Extensive experience in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, including design, set-up, troubleshooting, and interpretation of 1D, 2D, and 3D experiments
  • Scripting languages and pulse sequence programing ability would be a plus
  • Must be detail oriented and meticulous regarding documentation and data management
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
