Job summary

Recombia Biosciences is seeking a Scientist II for Automated Strain Engineering in Brisbane, CA. You will lead high-throughput cloning, yeast strain construction, and automation-enabled workflows to accelerate project timelines.

You will mentor junior researchers, collaborate with automation and software teams, and leverage AI for design and analysis while maintaining a strong safety culture in a dynamic startup-like environment.

Qualifications

• PhD in molecular biology or related field with 2+ years industry experience, or Master's with 7+ years.
• Expert-level hands-on experience in molecular biology (PCR, DNA purification, cloning, genome editing, DNA sequencing) of yeast and bacteria.
• Experience in microbial strain construction and characterization, particularly Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
• Ability to analyze sequencing data using bioinformatics pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate safety-first culture and follow all safety protocols.
• Develop and onboard high-throughput cloning methodologies and strain construction techniques.
• Execute high-quality cloning experiments using modular cloning, Gibson Assembly, and related methods.
• Design and implement transformation, gene editing, screening, and verification protocols.
• Translate benchtop protocols into automation-compatible formats and work with Automation Engineers.
• Collaborate with software developers to create scalable automated workflows.
• Apply Python or similar tools for autonomous data analysis and visualization.
• Mentor junior researchers and support lab operations and materials management.
