Job summary

Switch Bioworks in San Carlos, CA is seeking a Director of Strain Engineering to define strategy and lead execution of the strain and consortium engineering platform. You will drive high-throughput strain engineering and manage a team of exceptional scientists, owning budget and external partnerships.

You will be the technical lead for strain engineering in partner discussions, with hands-on lab work and cross-functional collaboration to connect design-build-test-learn with data systems and SOPs.

Qualifications

  • Proven leader who can build and scale scientific teams.
  • Track record engineering bacterial strains to commercial deployment.
  • Expertise in high-throughput strain and metabolic engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and lead Switch's bacterial strain engineering platform.
  • Direct tool development for DNA delivery, editing and integration systems.
  • Define circuit/metabolic strategy for improving strain performance.
  • Partner with CBO/CSO to deliver across workstreams for partnerships.
  • Collaborate with process development on manufacturability and formulation.
  • Identify patentable inventions and plan with regulatory in view.
  • Manage team budget and headcount, equipment, and services.
  • Lead hands-on bench work while setting strategic direction.
