Job summary

GrayMatter Robotics in Los Angeles, CA is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to lead mechanical hardware design for production-ready robotic systems. You will own EOAT design, DFMA, GD&T, FEA, prototyping, and cross-functional collaboration with Electrical and Software teams to ensure robust, safe, and scalable hardware.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years of CAD/prototyping experience, SolidWorks expertise, and a strong track record in manufacturing processes.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• Experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings.
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes; manual/CNC machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication.
• 8+ years working proficiency with CAD programs, hands-on prototyping or design for 3D printing.
• Proven track record of strong communication skills and cross-team collaboration.
• Willingness to work at an early stage company with dynamic priorities.
• Ability to conduct RCCAs and trade studies.
• Ability to solve problems effectively in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Robotic Hardware Design: Design hardware and mechanisms with focus on performance and reliability.
• EOAT Design & DFM: Drive EOAT improvements with ISO safety guidance.
• Advanced FEA & Simulation: Conduct FEA and thermal simulations to validate structures.
• Structural Analysis: Validate design integrity through analyses.
• Rapid Prototyping: Prototype hardware with DFMA in mind.
• Hardware Selection: Choose electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic components.
• System Integration: Ensure seamless motor, sensor, and cabling integration.
• System Troubleshooting & Optimization: Improve robustness of hardware and automation.
• Root Cause Analysis: Lead 8D/Fishbone/5 Whys investigations for field failures.
• Safety Compliance & Risk Assessment: Lead mechanical risk assessments per ISO 10218/ANSI standards.
• Design and Tolerance: Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFx concepts.
• Collaboration: Align with internal/external teams on customer requirements.
• BOM & Inventory Management: Manage BOMs and part numbers in PDM.
• Cost Reduction Initiatives: Apply VAVE to reduce BOM costs.
• Vendor Technical Management: Manage external suppliers for quality and lead time.
• Validation Strategy: Recommend design validation/testing protocols.
• Lifecycle Management: Oversee mechanical product lifecycle from concept to end-of-life.
• Mentorship: Develop junior engineers.
