Job summary

Goddard, based in Wilmington, seeks a Senior Software Engineer to own the integration layer between AI/ML models and physical systems. You will own the full stack from fieldbus communication and real-time control loops to interfaces that deploy trained models in the real world.

You will collaborate with ML, hardware, and mechanical teams to define inference contracts, latency budgets, and cross-boundary interfaces, building robust HIL and integration test infrastructure while documenting

Qualifications

• 5+ years shipping software that controls physical hardware in production.
• Proficient in C/C++ and Python; ROS/ROS 2 experience.
• Experience with EtherCAT, CANopen, Modbus, or Profinet in production systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement software that integrates ML model outputs with hardware, including motion controllers and industrial I/O.
• Develop and maintain ROS 2 nodes, hardware abstraction layers, and device drivers for robotics hardware.
• Interface with industrial robot controllers via vendor SDKs and standard protocols; translate capabilities into software requirements.
• Interface with embedded hardware over SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO, and CAN; collaborate with embedded engineers on cross-boundary interfaces.
• Integrate machine vision and camera systems; route vision outputs to control and inference logic.
• Collaborate with ML Engineer to define inference APIs, data contracts, and performance budgets.
• Develop real-time and near-real-time control loops on Linux (PREEMPT_RT) and RTOS targets; document timing and determinism.
