Job summary

NV5 seeks a Resident Engineer/Structure Representative to lead technical and administrative oversight of major bridge and heavy-civil construction in California. You will review plans, verify field dimensions, and ensure contract compliance while coordinating with contractors, project teams, and agency stakeholders.

The role focuses on applying engineering principles, codes, and established construction practices to ensure safety, quality, and timely delivery of critical transportation

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• California Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience with heavy civil transportation projects.
• Caltrans construction methods and practices, minimum 5 years.
• Experience performing field engineering tasks with increasing responsibility.
• Knowledge of stress analysis, structural mechanics, strength of materials.
• Understanding Cal-OSHA practices and protections; Greenbook exposure helpful.
• Experience in foundations, pile driving, CIDH, bridge components.
• Ability to use level and transit to verify line and grade.
• Familiarity with Caltrans field methods and office procedures.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical and administrative oversight of structural construction activities.
• Verify contractor work complies with contract documents and shop drawings.
• Review shop drawings, product data, samples, testing docs, QA plans.
• Perform or oversee temporary works calculations and acceptance.
• Verify field controls and confirm dimensions meet requirements.
• Inspect progress, materials, equipment, and workmanship per specs.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory rules.
• Identify issues, document deficiencies, coordinate corrective action.
• Prepare technical reports and client communications.
• Apply engineering principles to evaluate project work.
• Support project records management and document distribution.
