Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks a Senior Remote Maintenance Engineer to develop the ARC Remote Maintenance System. You will design RHE, collaborate with tokamak and plant engineering, and drive proactive R&D in novel remote maintenance technologies.

You will lead multi-disciplinary efforts across physics, neutronics, thermo-fluids, and materials while ensuring safety and manufacturability. This is a full-time role based in the U.S., with equity and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.
• 7+ years in mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and commissioning of complex structures.
• Experience designing remote handling equipment (RHE) using robotics or remotely operated systems.
• Proven leadership of R&D campaigns and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Develop concept of operations for ARC Remote Maintenance System.
• Participate in pre-conceptual design of the ARC fusion plant.
• Design radiation-hardened RHE with existing robotics and custom hardware.
• Assess tokamak/plant maintenance to enable remote operability.
• Collaborate with tokamak teams to optimize remote maintainability.
• Conduct high-level trade studies across physics, design, and economics.
• Coordinate across teams to solve complex multidisciplinary problems.
• Identify R&D needs and plan campaigns with internal or external partners.
• Review existing remote handling solutions for ARC applicability.
• Work with external robotics organizations and transfer knowledge to CFS.
• Establish remote maintenance design guidelines for RHE, Tokamak, and plant.
