Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing is seeking a Senior Relay Technician to lead protective relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance for medium- and high‑voltage substations. You will guide crews, ensure safety, and drive reliability in utility systems.

You will test protection schemes, verify control circuits, and mentor onsite technicians across regional projects. A technical degree or NETA credentials and a valid driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing 5kV–500kV protection systems.
• Strong knowledge of microprocessor-based relays.
• Familiar with modern relay test platforms.
• NETA Level III/IV preferred for senior roles.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety briefings and tailboards for field work.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on medium- and high-voltage systems.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure, bus).
• Verify control circuits for transformers, breakers, feeders, capacitor banks and reactors.
• Support outage planning, switching coordination, energization, and restoration activities.
• Perform event analysis, relay target review, and disturbance investigations.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians; coordinate with project managers and customers.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports, as-left settings, and field docs.
• Participate in job walks, project estimating, and customer technical discussions.
• Serve as a technical resource and trainer for relay technicians.
