Job summary

IDEXX in Westbrook, ME is seeking a Rare Reagent Process Engineer to lead optimization and transfer of rare reagents within the new product development cycle. You will work across organic chemistry, biochemistry, bioprocess, and material science to improve reagent performance, stability, and manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Engineering, or other STEM-related discipline.
  • A Bachelor's degree with 8-10 years of relevant laboratory experience, or a Master's degree with 3-5 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Experience with process development and characterization, technology transfer and training, validation, and/or commercial manufacturing support.
  • Knowledge of process optimization and scale-up from lab formulations to factory production is highly desirable.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to design experiments, analyze data, and develop practical solutions to complex challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and scientific presentations.
  • Familiarity with standard protein characterization techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, analytical SEC, IEF).
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in one or more protein conjugation chemistries is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mammalian biologics process development is highly desirable.
  • Sound judgment in assessing technical risks and opportunities.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in timelines, priorities, and other unexpected circumstances.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan work across teams.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment, FMEAs, and CEAs is highly desirable.
  • Experience with raw material characterization and specification setting is highly desirable.
  • Scientific curiosity and dedication to continuously learn and improve.

Responsibilities

  • You will perform experiments spanning organic chemistry, biochemistry, bioprocess, and material science to improve new liquid phase and solid phase reagents, their assay performance, stability, and manufacturability.
  • You will use design of experiments (DOE) methodology to guide statistically rigorous experiments that analytically and functionally characterize a wide variety of conjugates (biological and surface based).
  • You will contribute throughout the product development lifecycle, including feasibility assessment, process development, verification and validation activities, and investigations.
  • You will collaborate with teams across R&D and Operations from the conceptual design of reagents through development and transfer of processes into a manufacturing environment.
  • You will share process and reagent knowledge with downstream manufacturing teams.
