Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing is seeking a Senior Relay Technician to ensure safe, reliable operation of medium- and high-voltage substations through advanced testing, commissioning, and maintenance. You will lead field teams, guide outage work, and uphold our safety and quality standards.

The role requires 5+ years in protective relaying for utility substations, hands-on testing of 5kV–500kV systems, and strong knowledge of microprocessor relays.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Experience testing medium- to high-voltage protection systems (5kV–500kV).
• Strong knowledge of microprocessor-based relays and modern relay test platforms.
• Solid understanding of utility safety rules and energized work practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety briefings and field tailboards; reinforce a Safety First culture.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes.
• Verify control and protection circuits for transformers, breakers, feeders.
• Support outage planning, energization, and restoration activities.
• Lead and mentor onsite technicians; coordinate with managers and customers.
• Create accurate test reports, settings, and field documentation.
• Participate in job walks, estimating, and customer technical discussions.

Education

NETA Level III or IV Certification

Technical degree / apprenticeship

OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
