The Role
The Senior Project Manager leads delivery across a portfolio of concurrent digital projects, ensuring each engagement is executed on time, on budget, and to a high standard of quality across strategy, design, development, and integration phases. This is not a hands-on development role. Architecture decisions, code review, and day-to-day engineering leadership belong to the Tech Lead. The Senior PM brings deep Shopify fluency and enough technical grounding in modern commerce and CMS platforms to ask the right questions, sanity-check estimates and tradeoffs, and partner as a credible peer to Engineering, Design, and QA leads.
This role is defined first by delivery ownership: managing multiple concurrent engagements, holding a high standard of craft across every project they touch, owning senior client relationships, informing technical strategy during pre-sales, and contributing to the processes that keep the team predictable and profitable as it scales.
Responsibilities
- Owns end-to-end delivery across multiple concurrent projects, ensuring work stays on time, on budget, and within scope
- Models strong project management practices and contributes to shared templates and standards
- Provides peer feedback to other PMs on complex projects or client situations when asked
- Owns ticket writing, requirements documentation, and backlog grooming, and partners with Engineering, Design, and QA leads to shape technical approach and sequencing
- Leads risk identification and mitigation across their own active projects and flags cross-project resourcing conflicts to leadership for resolution
- Serves as the escalation point for their own at-risk projects, building recovery plans and leading change-order conversations
- Monitors scope across active projects, flags scope changes and risks to the Account Manager, and supports the preparation of change requests with effort estimates and documentation
- Weighs cost/benefit of third-party platforms, apps, and vendors from a delivery, timeline, and budget perspective, deferring architecture-level decisions to the Tech Lead
- Runs scrum or scrum-like ceremonies with engineering and design to keep sprints, priorities, and deliverables on track
- Translates technical concepts and tradeoffs into clear, actionable language for clients and non-technical stakeholders
- Continuously improves internal PM tooling, workflows, and reporting (e.g., Jira structure, sprint planning, hour tracking, status reporting)
- Maintains clear ownership and priority alignment across all workstreams within their active projects
Skills
- Deep, hands-on familiarity with Shopify and other digital commerce/CMS platforms, sufficient to evaluate technical approaches and tradeoffs
- Ability to write clear, well-structured tickets, user stories, and requirements documentation that engineering and design teams can execute against
- Strong grasp of third-party integrations, APIs, and custom development considerations
- Ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical clients and stakeholders
- Analytical mindset with the curiosity to dig into technical context without needing to own it
- Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities simultaneously
- Sound judgment balancing technical rigor with business, budget, and client priorities
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills, particularly with senior stakeholders and executives
- Strong financial acumen, including budget tracking, profitability management, and forecasting
- Comfortable sharing knowledge and best practices with peers in a collaborative team environment
- Calm, decisive leadership under pressure; comfortable owning difficult client and internal conversations
- Process-oriented mindset with a track record of building or improving PM systems, playbooks, and reporting cadences
- Strong web and Mac desktop skills; comfortable across Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Docs, and web-based PM tools such as Basecamp, Harvest, and JIRA
Experience
- 5-7+ years of experience in digital project management with a track record of hands-on delivery across complex, concurrent engagements
- Demonstrated experience managing Shopify (or similar ecommerce/CMS) projects from inception through launch
- Prior experience within a digital agency; additional experience in an ecommerce environment strongly preferred
- Experience writing tickets, user stories, and requirements documentation for engineering and design teams
- Experience managing scope within active projects, including identifying change requests, estimating effort, and supporting clients through scope conversations
- PMP, CSM, or equivalent certification preferred
