Job summary

Driver Digital is seeking a Senior Engineering Lead to own technical direction for large Shopify projects. You will work closely with the CTO, move beyond predefined requirements, and architect end-to-end solutions with a focus on scalability and maintainability.

This is a hands-on leadership role with client-facing responsibilities and a remote-first setup, requiring EST hours and occasional NYC onsite. You will mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and build tooling and workflows

Qualifications

About The Role

The agency is seeking a Senior Engineering Lead to work closely with the CTO and take technical ownership of significant Shopify projects. This is a hands‑on technical leadership and solutions architect position suited to a Senior Shopify Engineer or Technical Lead who can move beyond implementing predefined requirements and architect complete solutions.

You will take ownership of projects from technical discovery through architecture, implementation, testing, and launch. You will assess business and functional requirements, identify technical risks, evaluate different approaches, and define solutions that are scalable, maintainable, and appropriate for Shopify.

This is a client‑face leadership role that requires exceptional communication skills and deep Shopify expertise. You'll own clients and outcomes, set your own priorities across them, and be judged on results. The right candidate is comfortable leading technical conversations with non‑technical stakeholders, thrives on solving complex problems, and is excited about building tooling and workflows that make AI‑powered delivery effective. This role reports to the CTO.

You will write, review, and debug code in this role. Our human engineers own and take responsibility for all the code we produce, regardless of the tools we use to produce it.

Commitment: Full-time dedicated engagement. Contractors welcome, but this must be your primary commitment, not a side project.

Location: Remote, with required availability during EST business hours and 2x yearly team onsite in NYC. Americas or Europe preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical discovery with clients, asking the right questions to understand business needs and translate them into sound technical approaches.
• Assess technical requirements and identify dependencies, limitations, risks, and potential solutions.
• Determine when requirements can be met with native Shopify functionality and when custom development or third‑party technology is needed.
• Architect solutions for complex Shopify Plus implementations, including custom themes, integrations, and multi‑store configurations.
• Translate business requirements, designs, and project specifications into scalable Shopify architectures.
• Write clear proposals, project plans, technical solution documents, implementation plans, estimates, and clearly defined acceptance criteria for both internal teams and external clients.
• Own the technical delivery of significant Shopify projects from discovery through launch and post‑launch support.
• Break complex projects into appropriate junior, senior, and AI‑assisted engineering tasks, and assign work based on complexity, risk, and developer experience.
• Plan, write, review, and debug code, particularly for complex, high‑risk, or architecturally significant parts of a project.
• Explain architectural decisions, technical limitations, and trade‑offs clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.

Experience Required

• Significant professional experience developing complex Shopify stores and solutions, with expert‑level knowledge of Shopify's architecture, capabilities, APIs, and platform constraints.
• Previous experience as a Senior Shopify Engineer, Technical Lead, Solutions Architect, or in a similar technical leadership role.
• Deep understanding of ecommerce architecture: catalogs, variants, collections, navigation, search and filtering, promotions, checkout, orders, and customer accounts. Experience integrating Shopify with ERP, PIM, or subscription platforms.
• Experience with frontend frameworks like React, Next.js, and Svelte. Headless commerce or Sanity CMS experience is a plus.
• Experience building agentic systems or other significant applied AI experience: custom agents, tool and MCP integrations, orchestration, evals.
• Ability to translate Figma designs to production code.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
