Job summary

The City of Durham is seeking a recreation program assistant to support a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. You will help plan, organize, and supervise diverse programs while ensuring excellent customer service and safe operations across facilities.

You will engage with participants, families, and partners, translate materials as needed, and assist in data entry, budgeting, and staff coordination. This role may require evenings and weekends to meet community needs.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency (GED, HISet, TASC).
  • Two years of experience with diverse groups in a recreational setting, supervising activities, and providing customer service.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Valid Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED – with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification within six months of hire.
  • For Latino Outreach: bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in development and implementation of diverse indoor and outdoor recreational programs.
  • Assist in planning, organization, and supervision of athletic, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • Open/close facilities, monitor rentals, and lead activities.
  • Maintain records, collect fees, coordinate reports, and work with schools and community partners.
  • Communicate with participants, families, and community representatives; assist with outreach and engagement.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate part-time staff and volunteers.
