Job summary

Cognizant is seeking a Senior US Privacy Counsel to support US and Americas business. You will advise on privacy, data protection, and regulatory compliance, collaborating with product, engineering, and security teams to enable growth while maintaining high-quality standards.

You will lead privacy-by-design initiatives, manage incidents, and coordinate with executives on regulatory inquiries. Hybrid work with strong emphasis on ownership and continuous learning is offered.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited US law school and active bar membership in at least one US state.
• Seven or more years of experience in privacy and data protection, including significant in-house experience at a technology company.
• Deep command of US health privacy and security law, including HIPAA, HITECH, 42 CFR Part 2, and state statutes.
• Experience drafting and negotiating privacy clauses in complex agreements.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Balance legal risk with commercial objectives and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong ownership and passion for meaningful outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide authoritative legal counsel on US federal and state privacy laws (HIPAA, HITECH, 42 CFR Part 2, CCPA/CPRA).
• Negotiate and draft privacy-related agreements and maintain contracting playbooks.
• Partner with product/engineering to implement privacy-by-design across products and data flows.
• Lead privacy incident response and coordinate with security and leadership.
• Develop privacy policies, procedures, and training; manage regulatory inquiries and audits.
