Job summary

Johnson & Johnson Co. is seeking a Senior Principal Clinical R&D Engineer for Orthopaedics to lead technical and clinical input across the product lifecycle in a hybrid role based in Boston, MA or Warsaw, IN.

You will bridge medical device design, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and real-world clinical applications while collaborating across engineering, clinical, quality, and regulatory teams to deliver safe, effective device development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mechanical/biomedical/electrical or related) or equivalent.
• 12+ years’ experience in medical device R&D, clinical engineering, or related roles supporting product development.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across engineering, clinical, quality, and regulatory teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and practical problem solving ability.
• Direct experience in orthopedics, joint replacement, or surgical robotics.
• Knowledge of regulatory pathways (FDA, EU MDR).
• Experience with field actions, complaint investigations, HHAs, and recall processes.
• OR exposure and strong clinician relationships.
• Technical leadership with clinical focus

Responsibilities

• Translate VoC insights into clinical and engineering scope proposals.
• Support training and R&D rollouts.
• Assist surgeon and clinical staff during demos.
• Support high-trial clinical investigations when needed.
• Advise on usability.
• Collaborate with Regulatory to draft technical/clinical submissions.
• Review field actions, complaints, HHAs, recalls; provide risk assessments.
• Interface with physicians, QA, regulatory, and labs to answer questions.
• Contribute to technical sections for manuscripts and reports.
