Job summary

ABB in the United States seeks a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician to provide independent technical leadership for pre-startup, startup, commissioning, modification, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of ABB paralleling switchgear and controls in mission-critical power applications.

The role requires extensive nationwide travel to customer sites, on-site leadership of complex field activities, mentoring of junior engineers, and clear communication of status, risks, and recovery plans to

Qualifications

• HS diploma or GED with 7+ years field experience, or an associate/bachelor with 5+ years in related field.
• Experience with low-/medium-voltage switchgear, breakers, relays, generator controls, PLCs, HMIs/ACS, and industrial networking.
• Lead startup and commissioning activities, energization and switching, and direct multi-person site teams.
• Read electrical drawings and apply approved engineering methods in the field.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and customer communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute complex field assignments for paralleling switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes during startup and maintenance.
• Lead testing of emergency power systems, including transfers, load add/shed, paralleling, and baseload applications.
• Configure and troubleshoot generator controls, protective relays, meters, PLCs, HMIs, and ACS platforms.
• Perform advanced PLC ladder logic modifications using approved engineering documentation.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, and BMS/SCADA communications.
• Interpret one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and sequencing documents; coordinate commissioning procedures.
• Direct on-site execution, manage punch lists, and ensure on-time, on-budget completion.
• Mentor junior engineers, provide coaching on safety, troubleshooting, and customer communication.
• Prepare field service reports, checklists, and test documentation; maintain records.
• Protect assets, control costs, and identify quality improvements.
