Job summary

ABB is seeking a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician to lead field activities across pre-startup, startup, and commissioning for paralleling switchgear and PLC controls in mission-critical power systems.

The role requires extensive nationwide travel within the United States, with remote work options in the US. You will guide junior engineers, interface with customers, and ensure safe, on-time project execution.

Qualifications

• Independent field capability for highly complex assignments.
• Advanced experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, generator controls, PLC-based controls, HMIs/ACS, industrial networking, and mission-critical power systems.
• Hands-on startup and commissioning experience; coordinate energization and switching; manage field teams.
• Ability to read and redline complex electrical and control drawings; apply engineering methods in the field.
• Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
• Willingness to travel extensively across the United States; stay at customer sites when needed.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute complex field assignments for paralleling switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes.
• Lead testing of emergency and standby power systems including transitions and load management.
• Configure and troubleshoot generator controls, protective relays, switchgear controls, PLCs, HMIs, and ACS platforms.
• Perform troubleshooting of PLC ladder logic, I/O, communications, sequencing, and ACS parameters.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, and SCADA communications.
• Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and commissioning procedures.
• Lead on-site execution, coordinate daily work, report status and risks, close punch lists.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians; provide coaching on safety, troubleshooting, and client communication.
• Act as senior escalation resource for remote and on-site issues; assist in emergency response.
• Prepare field service reports, startup checklists, redlines, and test documentation.
