Job summary

ABB Inc. is seeking a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician to lead pre-startup, startup, commissioning, and maintenance of ABB paralleling switchgear and controls in mission-critical power applications across the United States.

You will guide junior field resources, interface with customers, contractors, and design teams, and travel extensively to customer sites. The role requires hands-on leadership for complex field activities, extensive field troubleshooting, and strong electrical/control diagram

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 7+ years of field experience or an associate/bachelor with 5+ years in related field.
• Demonstrated independent field capability for highly complex assignments.
• Advanced experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, generator controls, PLC-based controls, HMIs/ACS, and mission-critical power systems.
• Hands-on startup and commissioning leadership, coordinating energization and switching, troubleshooting under schedule pressure, and directing multi-person site teams.
• Ability to read, interpret, and redline electrical drawings and apply engineering methods in the field.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, customer communication, and field leadership skills.
• Willingness to travel extensively within the United States and stay at customer sites as needed.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute complex field assignments involving Paralleling Switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes during pre-startup to startup and commissioning.
• Lead testing of emergency/standby power systems and transfer sequences.
• Configure and troubleshoot generator controls, protective relays, switchgear controls, HMIs, and communications.
• Perform advanced PLC ladder logic modifications using approved engineering docs and change-control practices.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, and SCADA communications.
• Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and commissioning procedures.
• Lead on-site execution, coordinate daily work, and manage punch-lists and status updates.
• Mentor junior field engineers and technicians; provide coaching on safe execution and customer communication.
• Act as senior escalation resource for high-level remote/on-site troubleshooting.
