Job summary

City of Rochester Hills seeks a Building Official/Supervisor to manage plan reviews and on-site inspections for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. The role ensures public safety and reports to the Deputy Director, with oversight of staff and quality control processes.

Responsibilities include directing teams, coaching staff, interpreting building codes, and coordinating inspections. Requires MI certification, supervisory experience, and strong technical leadership.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in construction or related field.
• ICC certifications or ability to obtain within 3 years of hire date.
• Registration with the State of Michigan under Act 407 as Building Official/Inspector.
• Intermediate proficiency with office computers and related applications.

Responsibilities

• Schedules staff to maintain coverage and approve time off.
• Directs plan reviews and inspections staff and conducts performance evaluations.
• Provides leadership and technical interpretation of codes and regulations.
• Coordinates plan reviews, inspections, and compliance with regulatory policies.
• Performs audits and quality control for plans and inspections.
• Represents the department at meetings and court proceedings when needed.

Education

Associate’s Degree in construction or related field

ICC certifications: Residential Building Inspector / Commercial Building Inspector / Residential Plan Reviewer / Commercial Plan Reviewer

Michigan Act 407 Building Official/Inspector registration

Office computer proficiency
