Job summary

The City of Royal Oak, MI is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce the State Construction Code and City Zoning Ordinance. You will inspect new construction and existing buildings, review plans before permits, and issue permits under supervision.

Salary ranges from $70,902.83 to $93,713.14 annually with a $5.00 per hour certification premium for eligible inspectors. A High School Diploma and Michigan registration as Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer, plus a valid driver’s license, are

Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of the methods and materials used in building design and construction.
• Thorough knowledge of the State Construction Code and the City’s zoning requirements.
• Some knowledge of commonly used computer software.
• Ability to understand and interpret specifications.
• Ability to detect structural and other faults in buildings.
• Ability to read and understand construction documents.
• Ability to maintain good working relations with contractors, property owners, trades personnel, the public, and other employees.
• Ability to prepare comprehensive and clear reports in connection with work assignments.
• Ability to schedule work activities in an efficient and productive manner.
• Ability to walk or stand for long periods daily, work outside in inclement weather, climb stairs and ladders, and drive to inspection sites.

Responsibilities

• Enforce the State Construction Code and the City’s Zoning Ordinance and related building codes.
• Review plans for new buildings and remodels and approve permit applications.
• Perform inspections such as foundation, framing, and final inspections.
• Identify electrical, plumbing, sewer, and water issues and refer as needed.
• Answer inquiries and complaints about the Inspection Department.
• Check lot plans for conformity with zoning.
• Prepare reports and maintain records.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
