Job summary

Blue Origin, a leader in spaceflight development, seeks a Senior Optomechanical Engineer within Lunar Avionics to advance lidar and camera systems for crewed and uncrewed landers. You will drive optomechanical design from concept to flight hardware and coordinate across optics, electronics, and thermal teams.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Optical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years designing optomechanical assemblies or mechanisms for lidar, imaging, or guidance systems.
• Experience with lidar/optical imaging for aerospace, automotive, medical, or robotics applications.
• Experience with static structural, modal, random vibration, and thermal analysis.
• Strong 3D CAD modeling and FEA tool proficiency.
• Excellent communication of design concepts and analysis results.
• Ability to work across optics, electronics, thermal and vibration to solve integration issues.

Responsibilities

• Develop lidar- and vision-based optical sensor hardware for GN&C of lander systems.
• Own optomechanical design of optical systems with complex mounting and alignment.
• Create specifications, interface definitions, and control documents.
• Create 3D CAD models, drawings, and installation documents.
• Assemble, test prototypes, and build fixtures as needed.
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary design and field testing of lidar and optics.
• Lead procurement, vendor coordination, and component verification.
• Guide environmental testing and flight verification to top-level specs.
• Support mission assurance and safety initiatives and process improvements.
• Communicate status, risks, and challenges clearly.
• Contribute to cross-disciplinary teams in fast-paced design environments.
• Participate in full design cycle from concept to flight hardware.
