Job summary

Atom Computing in Boulder, CO seeks a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to lead the design of opto-mechanical subsystems, assist with fixturing, assembly, alignment, test, and integration.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 5–8+ years of opto-mechanical design experience, proficiency in SolidWorks/PDM, and strong FEA knowledge. You will mentor junior engineers and lead technical reviews.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (advanced degree a plus).
• 5–8+ years of opto-mechanical design experience.
• Hands-on experience with optics and opto-mechanical best practices.
• Mastery of SolidWorks, PDM, or equivalent design/data management software.
• Strong background with FEA (meshing, modal/thermal analysis).
• Understanding of adhesives/material science in optical environments.
• Knowledge of ASME Y14.5M and ISO 10110 tolerancing.
• Strong knowledge of first-order optics and aberration theory.
• Design of precision mechanisms and kinematic systems.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical reviews.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of opto-mechanical subsystems for laser distribution, high-NA microscopy, and optical cavities.
• Collaborate with physicists on vacuum chambers and mechanical coupling to optics.
• Own complex projects from concept to delivery and drive decisions.
• Analyze and recommend solutions balancing competing requirements.
• Create designs and specifications from component to system level.
• Perform stability, thermal, and tolerance analyses to evaluate designs.
• Assist in hands-on assembly, alignment, and integration of final designs.
