Job summary

BlackSky is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design and integration of satellite optical payloads from concept to production. You will establish requirements, collaborate with partners, and ensure integration with spacecraft bus structures to meet strict mission specs.

The role reports to the Director, Mechanical Engineering and is a hybrid position based out of Tukwila, WA. Prior space systems experience is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or similar.
• 10+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
• Experience maturing satellite/launch designs to detailed drawings.
• Experience with optical system design.
• Familiarity with space system design requirements.
• Experience leading small to moderate cross-functional teams.
• Proficient in CAD modeling and production drawings.
• Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 tolerancing.
• US Person status required.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and integration of payloads into satellite structures.
• Develop technical plans addressing requirements, risks, and schedule.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams across the program lifecycle.
• Create and maintain engineering and manufacturing documentation.
• Support manufacturing by resolving build issues and implementing corrective actions.
• Develop tooling and ground support equipment as needed.
• Ensure payloads meet mechanical requirements with partners.
