Job summary

BlackSky is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer for the Optical Payload team in Tukwila, WA. You will lead mechanical design and integration of satellite payloads, ensuring compatibility with spacecraft structures and meeting stringent thermal and structural requirements.

You will collaborate with partners and internal teams, produce CAD models and drawings, and mentor junior engineers while contributing to production readiness and testing strategies.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
• Experience maturing satellite/launch designs from concept to drawings.
• Experience with optical system mechanical design.
• Familiarity with space-system design requirements.
• Experience leading small-to-medium cross-functional teams.
• Must be a US Person.
• Proficiency with CAD for parts, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and integration of payloads into satellite structures.
• Develop plans addressing requirements, risks and schedule.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams across programs.
• Create and maintain CAD models, drawings and BOMs.
• Document design data in reports and manufacturing systems.
• Support production with design intent and issue resolution.
• Develop tooling and ground support equipment as needed.
