Job summary

Transitions - Mental Health Association in San Luis Obispo seeks a Controller to manage day-to-day accounting operations, supervise the Finance Department, and ensure GAAP compliance across grants and contracts. You will lead month-end close, prepare financial statements, and support audits.

The ideal candidate has a CPA/CMA/CA preferred credential, 7+ years in accounting with leadership experience, and strong Excel and reporting skills within a nonprofit setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with substantial accounting coursework.
• Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls.
• CPA/CMA/CA or comparable credential preferred.
• 7+ years accounting experience with 3+ years in management.
• Experience with nonprofit, grants, and government contracts accounting preferred.
• Strong Excel and financial reporting skills.

Responsibilities

• Direct and oversee the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations.
• Manage month-end close and financial reporting deadlines.
• Maintain general ledger integrity and cost allocations.
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable, payroll, grants, and related processes.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and grant requirements.
• Coordinate audits and tax/regulatory compliance.
• Supervise Finance staff and provide training and mentoring.
• Support budgeting and forecasting activities.
