Job summary

Root Edge is seeking a hands-on principal electrical engineer to own the islanded plant control architecture for a high-density, off-grid data-center power solution. You will lead end-to-end integration of grid-forming inverters, BESS PCS, and multi-vendor EMS/MGC systems, ensuring stable island operation and robust protection coordination.

You will collaborate with OEMs, validate designs with EMT/PSCAD models, and drive commissioning, testing, and field troubleshooting at scale.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field.
• 7–10+ years in utility-scale solar, BESS, or power electronics with hands-on ownership of SLDs and power-conversion integration.
• Fluency with electrical CAD and study tools (SKM, ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar).
• Deep understanding of grid-forming vs. grid-following inverter architecture and BESS PCS behavior.

Responsibilities

• Define the control philosophy and ownership of the islanded plant control hierarchy; specify MGC/EMS interfaces and end-to-end vendor integration.
• Specify, evaluate, and validate grid-forming inverters and BESS PCS; model and verify control behavior, fault response, and interactions in an IBR-dominant plant.
• Conduct islanded power-system studies: load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, grounding, load following, and stability.
• Engage OEM technical teams on PCS, BESS, and controls; track FEOC-compliant equipment options where ITC eligibility is at stake.
• Lead commissioning and validation: write test plans and support bring-up, acceptance tests, and field troubleshooting.
