Job summary

Metro Associates in the Dallas–Fort Worth area is seeking a Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer to design, integrate, and deploy large-scale thermal energy storage and chilled-water systems for data centers and commercial facilities. This home-based role requires collaboration with engineering, operations, and customers across the U.S.

You will lead mechanical design, create P&IDs, perform hydraulic calculations, and mentor junior engineers while traveling about 20%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience involving HVAC, chilled-water systems, cooling plants, or energy infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of hydronic systems, thermodynamics, central cooling plants, and BAS/BMS integration.
• Experience coordinating mechanical systems with electrical and controls disciplines.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, or similar engineering/design software.
• Familiarity with commissioning, startup, and field-execution processes.
• Willingness to travel approximately 20% domestically.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and integration of thermal energy storage and chilled-water systems.
• Develop and review P&IDs, hydronic piping layouts, equipment arrangements, valve schedules, and controls-integration interfaces.
• Perform hydraulic calculations and pipe-stress analysis supporting system design and code-compliant documentation.
• Integrate systems with chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, and BAS/BMS platforms.
• Coordinate with data center operators, MEP engineering firms, mechanical contractors, controls integrators, design engineers, and commissioning teams.
• Support site surveys, startup, commissioning, functional testing, and troubleshooting activities.
• Provide technical engineering input for proposals, RFP responses, presales activities, and mechanical system narratives.
• Develop and utilize engineering automation tools using Python, Excel/VBA, or similar technologies.
• Collaborate with product-development and engineering teams to improve system designs and deployment methods.
• Mentor junior engineers as the engineering organization expands.
