Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a hands-on mechanical design engineer to own multi-axis precision motion subsystems. You will design, analyze, and iterate mechanisms from concept to production, using 3D modeling and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.

Expect cross-disciplinary collaboration with controls, electrical, and process teams on live hardware in a production environment. The role emphasizes solving complex tolerance and calibration challenges, driving integration with thermal and fluid subsystems, and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience designing precision mechanical systems, industrial machinery, automation equipment, or aerospace mechanical system elements.
  • Experience designing multi-axis motion systems—gantries, stages, slides, or comparable servo-driven precision positioning hardware.
  • Experience designing mechanisms such as linkages, actuators, latches, hinges, disconnect devices, or similar kinematic assemblies.
  • Strong mechanical design, integration, and mechanism analysis skills using 3D modeling and simulation tools (CREO preferred).
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5) and performing tolerance stacks.
  • Working knowledge of mechanism loads analysis, free-body diagrams, and basic structural calculations.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes, and building hardware for shop-floor production.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware in operation and earn trust in a team environment.
  • U.S. citizenship or eligible to work in the U.S. citizenship requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical design of multi-axis precision motion subsystems—dual-motor axes and high-resolution feedback chains.
  • Design and analyze mechanism assemblies including linkages, actuators, latches, and cable routing for flexing service loops.
  • Diagnose and resolve position-dependent geometric error and develop calibration methods.
  • Participate in the full design cycle from concept to production release.
  • Generate 3D models, drawings, and interface control documents with GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis on precision assemblies.
  • Collaborate with controls, electrical, and process engineering across multiple controllers.
  • Create documentation for assembly, commissioning, and test of development hardware.
