Job summary

Kimley-Horn’s Kansas City office seeks a Mechanical Engineer with 10+ years of experience to lead power generation projects, including gas and coal-fired facilities. You will design and coordinate piping, tanks, and vessels, develop P&IDs, and deliver life‑cycle analyses while mentoring junior staff.

You will collaborate with clients, jurisdictions, and contractors, applying engineering standards to ensure project success and regulatory compliance across multiple power plant projects.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in power generation design and related engineering.
  • Experience with simple cycle, combined cycle plants using natural gas, fuel oil, and diesel and/or coal-fired generation is preferred.
  • PE license in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • Strong technical focus; familiarity with power performance modelling software (GT Pro or similar).
  • Understanding of project life cycle, feasibility studies, and large power plant engineering & construction.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates, work plans, schedules, and perform engineering work with independence.
  • Provide guidance, technical direction, and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and external partners.
  • Lead mechanical engineering efforts for power generation projects (gas/coal).
  • Design and support air quality and effluent-related systems; piping, pumps, tanks, and vessels as needed.
  • Develop and review P&IDs to accurately represent systems and operations.
  • Conduct equipment condition assessments and lifecycle cost analyses.
  • Design plumbing for sanitary and potable water systems; pump and piping system sizing.
