Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead design teams across power, process, healthcare, and industrial facilities in the Raleigh area. You will guide the mechanical design through conceptualization, detailed design, and construction, aligning with budget, schedule, and client needs.

You will review equipment selections, oversee CAD outputs, coordinate with other disciplines, and mentor junior engineers while pursuing QA/QC excellence and project profitability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 7 years mechanical engineering experience.
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 7 years mechanical engineering experience.
  • Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 6 years mechanical engineering experience. EPC project experience preferred.
  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE). Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members. Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion per project managers' requirements.
  • Prepare mechanical equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings and data interface with suppliers, clients, and other engineers.
  • Develop project schedule, scope, budget, staffing planning and construction planning; manage change orders.
  • Apply expert knowledge of mechanical concepts, practices, codes and procedures in engineering services.
  • Provide non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
  • Quality review production drawings and project data across CAD software.
  • Coordinate construction administration with field personnel for design-related issues, calculations, inspections and testing.
  • Lead field inspections, installations, measurements or calculations for clients.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Build relationships with clients and contractors and pursue new business opportunities; ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial targets.
  • Prepare and present budgets and cost estimates; report project performance.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to the mechanical engineering practice; guide junior engineers.
  • Ensure QA/QC adherence and cross-discipline communication.
  • Commit to company and site safety policies; perform other duties as assigned
