Job summary

Hydro is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide engineering expertise for aluminum extrusion manufacturing equipment and processes. This role leads mechanical engineering projects, equipment improvements, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives while partnering closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and other engineering functions.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and at least 10 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment,

Qualifications

• Experience in large-scale industrial manufacturing environments.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems; troubleshooting and failure analysis.
• Experience designing or implementing machine guarding and engineering controls to reduce hazards.
• Ability to evaluate equipment layouts and space utilization for new installations and modifications.
• Experience investigating structural integrity concerns involving industrial equipment and lifting systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide mechanical engineering support for extrusion manufacturing equipment and processes.
• Lead reliability, productivity, and continuous improvement projects to enhance safety, quality, throughput, and cost.
• Troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment and process issues; develop corrective actions.
• Design, specify, modify, and improve equipment, components, tooling, and mechanical systems.
• Develop engineering specifications, layouts, drawings, calculations, and project documentation.
• Lead capital projects from concept through installation, commissioning, and startup.
• Partner with Maintenance and Operations to identify reliability opportunities and eliminate recurring failures.
• Analyze performance data to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
• Support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for critical equipment.
• Ensure solutions comply with safety, environmental, and industry standards.
• Collaborate with suppliers and contractors on selection and installation.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing engineering expertise to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of aluminum extrusion manufacturing equipment and processes. This position leads mechanical engineering projects, equipment improvements, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives while partnering closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and other engineering functions.

Essential Job Responsibilities

• Provide mechanical engineering support for aluminum extrusion presses, billet heating systems, handling systems, saws, pullers, runout tables, aging ovens, packaging equipment, and related manufacturing systems.
• Lead equipment reliability, productivity, and continuous improvement projects to improve safety, quality, throughput, and operating cost.
• Troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment and process issues and develop effective corrective actions.
• Design, specify, modify, and improve equipment, components, tooling, and mechanical systems.
• Develop engineering specifications, equipment layouts, drawings, calculations, and project documentation.
• Lead capital projects from concept and justification through installation, commissioning, and startup.
• Partner with Maintenance and Operations to identify equipment reliability opportunities and eliminate recurring failures.
• Analyze equipment performance, downtime, and process data to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
• Support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for critical production equipment.
• Ensure engineering solutions comply with applicable safety, environmental, and industry standards.
• Work with suppliers and contractors on equipment selection, design, installation, and technical issues.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, root cause analysis, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
• Participate in equipment and process risk assessments, MOC activities, and project reviews.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to maintenance and operations personnel as needed.

Required Education/Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• At least 10 years of engineering experience.
• Experience working in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications

• Experience supporting mechanical equipment in a large-scale industrial manufacturing environment, such as metals, aluminum, steel, foundry, automotive, or heavy process manufacturing.
• Strong working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including troubleshooting, system improvements, and failure analysis.
• Experience designing or implementing machine guarding, fail-safe systems, and engineering controls that reduce employee exposure to hazards.
• Ability to evaluate equipment layouts, maintenance access requirements, and space utilization for new equipment installations and plant modifications.
• Experience investigating structural integrity concerns involving industrial equipment, lifting systems, cranes, or supporting structures.
