Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Mechanical Designer in Kansas City, MO. This role supports planning, evaluations, and development of mechanical drawings for a diverse project portfolio.

You will produce PFDs and P&IDs, refine sketches, and ensure designs meet codes and standards. You will collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers, handling complex layouts, calculations, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in drafting technology or related field with 7 years related experience.
• Associate degree with 8 years related experience.
• 9 years progressive detailing and design experience.
• Advanced understanding of AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables.
• Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
• Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers and Designers in a multi-discipline project team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Perform assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation.
• Produce complete PFDs and P&IDs from verbal or written description.
• Execute basic formulas and use fundamental mechanical concepts in designs.
• Plan and develop drawings for production work including analysis, layout and calculations.
• Execute mechanical design assignments using prescribed methods and refine sketches.
• Make design changes or redlines on ongoing projects.
• Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects.
• Interpret and apply design codes and specifications.
• Coordinate as liaison between US and BMI for drafting workflow.
• Assemble and issue project packages (PDFs, CAD files, 3D models, specs).
• Complies with policies and standards.
