Job description

JLRD, Inc. is a Florida-based MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and fire protection consulting engineering firm founded in 1991. Headquartered in West Palm Beach with offices in Merritt Island, Jacksonville, and Tampa, JLRD delivers all four engineering disciplines in-house across healthcare, education, government, federal, aviation, utilities and infrastructure, commercial and mixed-use, hospitality, residential, and mission-critical facilities.

We are privately owned and engineering-led. We compete on technical depth, not scale, and we build teams accordingly.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Mechanical Designer is a senior producer on JLRD's firm-wide Mechanical discipline. This role owns entire mechanical design scopes end-to-end, coordinates across disciplines proactively, mentors junior team members, and supports QA/QC on team output.

You will work across projects and clients regardless of which office originates them, collaborating with Designers, Engineers, and Project Managers across all JLRD offices. This position reports to our Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Department Lead.

Position is based in Merritt Island, Florida or West Palm Beach, Florida. On-site.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Mechanical Design Production
  • Own end-to-end mechanical design scopes on assigned projects across sectors and offices, from concept through construction documents
  • Produce Revit MEP models and construction documents for HVAC systems, ventilation and exhaust, hydronic distribution, and building automation
  • Perform load calculations and equipment selection using Trane Trace or Carrier HAP
  • Develop mechanical specifications and technical scope narratives
  • Support commissioning documentation and coordinate with commissioning agents
  • Proactively coordinate with Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection designers on system integration
  • Coordinate with architectural and structural teams on space allocation, chase locations, and equipment placement
  • Identify and resolve conflicts before they reach the Project Engineer or Department Lead
  • Perform clash detection using Navisworks and lead resolution meetings
Mentorship and Quality Control
  • Mentor Junior Designers and mid-level Designers on system-level design understanding and Revit MEP best practices
  • Support QA/QC review on team output, catching errors before deliverables leave the office
  • Contribute to firm-wide Mechanical discipline standards development and template maintenance
Client and Project Support
  • Attend client design review meetings and represent the mechanical design scope
  • Support Construction Administration on RFIs, submittal review, and site observations
  • Coordinate with the Department Lead on complex technical decisions and specialized systems
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (equivalent experience considered)
  • 5 to 10 years of MEP consulting mechanical design experience in institutional, commercial, healthcare, education, or government facilities
  • Revit MEP proficiency for mechanical design production, including families, templates, and coordination workflows
  • Trane Trace or Carrier HAP for load calculations and energy modeling
  • Navisworks for clash detection and coordination
  • Deep code knowledge in ASHRAE, IMC, NFPA (mechanical scopes), and Florida Building Code
  • Demonstrated independent scope ownership on mechanical design projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication for client-facing and internal work
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Healthcare mechanical experience, including FGI and AHCA compliance, pressure relationships, and occupied clinical environments
  • Education sector experience, including K-12 and higher education (Florida SREF compliance a plus)
  • Federal facilities experience, including UFC and USACE design standards
  • Central plant experience (chilled water plants, boiler plants, thermal storage)
  • Clean room environments, controlled temperature and humidity spaces, or precision environmental controls
  • Building automation and controls integration experience
  • Commissioning experience
  • LEED accreditation or energy modeling experience
SCHEDULE
  • Monday through Thursday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Friday, 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM (half-day Fridays year-round)
BENEFITS
  • Health insurance with 100% of employee premium covered by JLRD, eligible after 30 days
