Job description

JLRD, Inc. is a Florida-based MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and fire protection consulting engineering firm founded in 1991. Headquartered in West Palm Beach with offices in Merritt Island, Jacksonville, and Tampa, JLRD delivers all four engineering disciplines in-house across healthcare, education, government, federal, aviation, utilities and infrastructure, commercial and mixed-use, hospitality, residential, and mission-critical facilities.

We are privately owned and engineering-led. We compete on technical depth, not scale, and we build teams accordingly.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Electrical Engineer is the senior technical authority for JLRD's Electrical discipline. This role stamps designs, sets technical standards, leads complex pursuits, mentors the Electrical team of engineers and designers, and represents JLRD as a client-facing technical leader on the firm's most significant projects.

This is a technical leadership role, not a project management role. We are looking for a licensed Professional Engineer with both depth and breadth in electrical engineering for MEP consulting. JLRD works across many sectors and facility types, and this role requires someone who has seen how systems and codes translate across them. Narrow specialization in a single vertical is not what we need.

This position reports to the Electrical Department Lead.

Position is based in West Palm Beach, Florida or Merritt Island, Florida. On-site.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Technical Authority and Design Leadership

  • Serve as Engineer of Record on assigned projects, stamp electrical designs, and own final technical review and approval
  • Establish and maintain the Electrical discipline's technical standards, including calculation methods, drawing conventions, specification templates, and quality control checkpoints
  • Lead technical scope development on complex pursuits, particularly those requiring multi-sector expertise or specialized systems
  • Provide independent engineering judgment on unusual conditions, non-standard designs, and coordination conflicts
  • Perform arc flash hazard analysis, short circuit evaluation, protective device coordination studies, and load flow analysis as required by project scope
  • Coordinate with the Mechanical and Plumbing/Fire Protection Department Leads on cross-discipline system integration

Mentorship and Team Development

  • Mentor Project Engineers on complex technical work, sector-specific code compliance, and independent engineering judgment
  • Mentor Senior Designers and Designers on system-level design understanding
  • Provide formal QA/QC review on assigned projects across the Electrical team
  • Support Project Engineers pursuing PE licensure through direct sponsorship and exam preparation

Client-Facing Technical Leadership

  • Represent JLRD as the electrical technical lead in client design reviews, coordination meetings, and value engineering discussions
  • Contribute to significant pursuits as the technical face of the Electrical discipline
  • Build and maintain relationships with client technical staff, architects, contractors, and specialty consultants
  • Support business development through technical credibility and industry visibility

Discipline Operations

  • Contribute to Electrical discipline workload planning, project assignment, and resource forecasting
  • Support recruitment and hiring for the Electrical team, including interviewing candidates and evaluating technical capability
  • Maintain awareness of industry developments, code changes, and emerging technologies relevant to JLRD's sector mix

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited)
  • Professional Engineer license, either Florida PE or willingness to obtain Florida PE by endorsement within 90 days of start
  • 10 to 15+ years of MEP consulting engineering experience in electrical design for institutional, commercial, industrial, or mission-critical facilities
  • Demonstrated breadth across multiple sectors, minimum of three from healthcare, education, government, federal, aviation, utilities and infrastructure, commercial, hospitality, or mission-critical
  • Deep code expertise in NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 72, IBC, and applicable Florida Building Code chapters
  • Proficiency with electrical power analysis software (SKM Power Tools or ETAP)
  • Proficiency with Revit MEP for electrical design production
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing engineering staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for client-facing technical work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Healthcare electrical experience, including FGI and AHCA compliance, essential electrical systems, and medical equipment coordination
  • Education sector experience, including K-12 and higher education (Florida SREF compliance a plus)
  • Federal facilities experience, including UFC and USACE design standards, essential power systems, and secure facility design
  • Aviation experience, including 400 Hz power, apron lighting, and terminal systems
  • Multi-state PE licensure
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP credential
  • Low-voltage systems coordination (security, CCTV, access control, structured cabling)

SCHEDULE

  • Monday through Thursday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Friday, 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM (half-day Fridays year-round)

BENEFITS

  • Health insurance with 100% of employee premium covered by JLRD
  • Short-term and long-term disability, life insurance
  • Safe Harbor Non-Elective 401(k) with 3% JLRD contribution, eligible after one year
  • 2 weeks vacation, 6 paid sick days, 7 paid holidays
