Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our mining equipment client in Welkom, Free State. You will lead design efforts from concept through production, delivering robust, reliable machinery and assemblies.

You will apply advanced CAD and FEA, drive manufacturability, and mentor engineers while ensuring compliance with industry safety and environmental standards in the mining sector.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 7+ years of progressive mechanical design experience, preferably in mining or heavy industry.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software and FEA tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Inventor; ANSYS, Abaqus).
• Strong knowledge of materials science, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and machine dynamics.
• Experience in designing complex mechanisms, hydraulic systems, and power transmission components.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Must be able to work on-site in Welkom, Free State.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed mechanical designs for heavy-duty mining machinery using CAD.
• Perform stress, thermal, and vibration analyses to validate designs.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, and service teams for manufacturability.
• Create and maintain BOMs, drawings, specs, and assembly instructions.
• Troubleshoot design issues during prototyping, testing, and production.
• Evaluate new materials, technologies, and processes to improve performance and reduce costs.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical growth.
• Ensure designs comply with mining industry standards and safety regulations; on-site in Welkom.
