Job summary

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at Corning Inc. in Newton, North Carolina leads the design and implementation of robust automation and production systems for Corning’s manufacturing plants.

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
• 5+ years of mechanical design experience in production machinery.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or Inventor, AutoCAD, and GD&T.
• Experience with automation systems, robotics, and material handling.
• Strong PM, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Experience with external machine builders and system integrators.
• Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems, pneumatics, fluid power, and machine safety standards.
• Ability to work independently in a matrixed environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and support prototype and production process equipment through build, integration, and startup.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and process equipment issues and develop robust solutions.
• Identify design improvements and conduct proof-of-concept testing.
• Coordinate with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers.
• Prepare and review construction and installation drawings; ensure as-built docs meet standards.
• Support projects for equipment installation, capacity expansion, and machine handoff.
• Track schedules and expenditures; report results to stakeholders.
