Job summary

Markel is seeking a seasoned claims professional to handle personal lines marine bodily injury claims from coverage enquiry through liability assessment and settlement analysis. The role involves mediation, litigation where relevant, and subrogation opportunities while managing an active caseload with moderate to high complexity.

You will interact with internal and external stakeholders, direct outside vendors, and participate in training and roundtables with senior leaders.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of claims experience.
• Strong knowledge of bodily injury claims, including litigation.
• Proven track record in customer service/experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organization and time management skills.
• Experience directing outside vendors (surveyors and outside counsel).
• Ability to set reserves and evaluate settlement values.
• Ability to self-manage an active caseload.
• Travel 10–15% as necessary.
• College degree and/or professional designation preferred.
• Knowledge of marine insurance is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Typically handles moderate to complex exposure personal lines marine bodily injury claims.
• Confirms coverage by reviewing policies and documents.
• Directs and monitors assignments to experts and outside counsel.
• Analyzes coverage and communicates positions; prepares letters.
• Uses investigation and settlement techniques to close claims timely and cost-effectively.
• Coordinates loss information for stakeholders and presents in meetings.
• Travel to mediations, trials, and conferences as required.
• Mentors colleagues and provides training as needed.
