Johnson & Johnson MedTech is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer to lead production of the OTTAVA surgeon input device in Santa Clara, CA. You will own end‑to‑end manufacturing processes, from subassemblies to final integration, ensuring precision, reliability, and scalable production.

You will collaborate with R&D, Quality, and Operations to translate design intent into robust, validated processes, driving device readiness for clinical use and broad deployment.

Qualifications

  • 8–10 years of manufacturing or assembly engineering experience, with at least 5 years supporting precision electromechanical mechanisms, haptic devices, robotic controls, medical capital equipment, or equivalent high‑reliability systems.
  • Expertise in precision mechanism assembly: bearing preload, cable-, belt-, or gear‑driven mechanisms, encoder/sensor integration, motor assemblies, alignment, bonding, and lubrication control.
  • Strong manufacturing engineering background: BOM structure, process documentation (MPI, DHR, MES), and PFMEA.
  • Medical device experience with a proven track record in NPI environments.
  • Electromechanical systems: extensive troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation domains.
  • CAD proficiency: SolidWorks, ASME Y14.5 GD&T, and 3D tolerance analysis.
  • Strong statistical proficiency – SPC, Cpk, DOE, Minitab, or equivalent.
  • Experience maturing manufacturing processes from prototype/pilot to validated, scalable production.
  • Experience planning and executing cross‑functional process development, equipment, documentation, and validation deliverables.
  • Over 3 years in a regulated environment (J&J or equivalent), with SOPs and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and own assembly processes for OTTAVA surgeon input device and major mechanical subassemblies.
  • Develop assembly sequence logic for error control, friction, preload, and encoder alignment.
  • Define datum schemes, fixturing, and measurement methods across assembly stages.
  • Author manufacturing processes, MPI/DHR/MES, and inspection criteria.
  • Define integration of bearings, belts, cables, gears, and precision electronics.
  • Determine metrology and test requirements for assembly reliability and verification.
  • Specify precision assembly equipment and fixtures for scalable production.
  • Improve calibration and test inputs affecting device performance and repeatability.
  • Use SPC and DOE to detect drift and drive root‑cause investigations.
  • Lead cross‑functional reviews and documentation through launch and production.
  • Mentor junior engineers on precision assembly and manufacturing best practices.
