Job summary

Viridan Group in Houston, TX is seeking a seasoned Transmission Planning Engineer to lead interconnection studies and feasibility screens for multi-state grid projects.

You will coordinate with TOs, utilities, and ISO/RTO staff, file interconnection requests, mentor junior engineers, and travel up to 30% as needed.

Applicants bring 5+ years in transmission planning, proficiency with PSS/E, PSLF, HVDC, and multi-region tariff knowledge across MISO, SPP, PJM, ERCOT and the non-RTO West.

Responsibilities

• Lead power flow, contingency, short circuit and voltage studies to shape project feasibility.
• Prepare and manage interconnection filings and portfolio trackers.
• Serve as technical contact with TOs, utilities, and ISO/RTO staff.
• Review ISO/RTO study results and propose mitigations to reduce cost/schedule risk.
• Evaluate network upgrade cost allocation and queue strategies.
• Negotiate interconnection agreements with Legal and Commercial.
• Mentor Transmission & Interconnection Engineers and represent the company in RTO meetings.
• Provide routing, sizing, POI selection and acquisition due diligence input.

Our client is a well-funded developer of large scale, multi-state transmission projects, backed by a leading energy investor and led by proven industry leaders.

Transmission development has never been more complex. As the grid shifts to a broader, more distributed resource mix, getting interconnection strategy right is one of the most technically and commercially demanding challenges in the power sector. This role sits right at that intersection. It's grounded in hands-on planning studies and interconnection management, with real exposure to tariffs, RTO stakeholder processes and HVDC systems.

What You'll Do

• Lead power flow, contingency (N-1/N-1-1), short circuit and voltage studies to screen POIs and shape project feasibility
• Prepare, file and manage interconnection and transmission service requests, and own the portfolio tracker (milestones, payments, security postings, queue timelines)
• Serve as the primary technical contact with TOs, utilities and ISO/RTO staff, and negotiate study assumptions, results and mitigation
• Review and challenge ISO/RTO study results, and propose alternative mitigations to reduce cost and schedule risk
• Evaluate network upgrade cost allocation, affected system impacts and restudy risk, then recommend queue strategy
• Support negotiation of interconnection and facilities study agreements with Legal and Commercial
• Manage study consultants and mentor Transmission & Interconnection Engineers
• Represent the company in RTO stakeholder meetings and working groups
• Provide technical input on routing, sizing, POI selection and acquisition due diligence

What You Bring

• 5+ years in transmission planning, interconnection or transmission service, including hands-on experience filing and managing interconnection requests
• Proficiency in PSS/E, PSLF, TARA or PowerWorld (PROMOD, GridView or PLEXOS a plus)
• Multi-region tariff and cluster study knowledge across MISO, SPP, PJM, ERCOT and the non-RTO West
• Planning-level knowledge of HVDC, substations and transmission line design
• Supervisory or mentoring experience preferred; MSEE, MBA or PE a plus
• Ability to travel up to 30%
