Job summary

M&T Bank Corporation in Buffalo, New York is seeking an expert-level mainframe software engineer to lead delivery of critical mainframe applications, coach colleagues, and ensure compliance with SDLC and banking technology standards.

You will own technical decisions, review changes, drive performance and resiliency, and help modernize through API enablement, data integration, and DevOps, while collaborating across architecture, product, security, and operations.

Qualifications

• Expert proficiency in a minimum of 1 programming language and professional proficiency in a minimum of 1 additional programming language.
• Expert proficiency with mainframe software engineering and application development.
• Experience with IBM z/OS, COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 for z/OS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, and Easytrieve+.
• Experience with GitLab or similar tools for source control, change management, and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Develop and coach other team members while also working independently on mainframe applications within approved SDLC processes.
• Lead design, development, enhancement, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and support of mainframe applications across batch and online processing.
• Own technical decisions and delivery quality for assigned mainframe platforms, workstreams, or technical initiatives.
• Review designs and pull requests, code changes, and deployment readiness; ensure code quality and secure development practices.
• Design peer review processes and coach on data structures, algorithms, and engineering approaches.
• Oversee source control management activities, including code merges into production path, GitLab practices, change management, and CI/CD.
• Write organized, secure source code and guide team on appropriate data structures and engineering approaches.
• Drive modernization through API enablement, data integration, DevOps adoption, and AI-assisted engineering where appropriate.
• Communicate architecture, progress, risks, blockers, and challenges to business and technical stakeholders.
