Guardian Life is seeking an Underwriting Large Case Specialist to operate as a senior technical expert in life underwriting. This remote US role adjudicates complex, high-value cases, guides peers, and collaborates with field and home-office teams to ensure compliant, customer-centric decisions.

Qualifications

• 15-20 years of experience in individual life underwriting.
• Experience handling large, complex cases for high-net-worth applicants.
• Industry related education (FALU, FLMI, etc.)
• Expertise in individual life underwriting, including complex and high-dollar cases.
• Experience with reinsurance frameworks, treaty language, retention limits, reinsurance rules, and collaboration with reinsurers.
• Expertise reviewing complex financial statements, tax returns, etc.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies (EHR, GenAI, wearable tech) and behavioral economics concepts.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Adjudicate the most complex and high-value cases within underwriting guidelines, mortality, morbidity, and product expectations.
• Provide expert guidance on escalated cases and troubleshooting for staff and management.
• Communicate with field partners and home office to obtain information, solve problems, negotiate appeals, and convey decisions.
• Build partnerships with distribution leaders, agencies, and field partners to ensure alignment and service excellence.
• Apply deep reinsurance expertise to ensure proper use of automatic and facultative reinsurance and collaborate with underwriters.
• Serve as a trusted underwriting partner to Distribution and Field leadership to drive case placement and relationships.
• Maintain knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
• Champion adoption of modern underwriting tools and platforms.
• Mentor and train underwriters in advanced financial underwriting.
• Monitor industry trends and share insights for prudent decisions.
