Job summary

WSP is seeking an ESSP Senior Lead Protection Engineer to join our team in Overland Park, KS, with consideration for other U.S. offices.

You will design, engineer, and study protection systems for bulk power equipment, including substations and transmission elements, collaborating with a growing power practice. You will lead project teams, mentor engineers, and ensure compliance with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC standards while coordinating data collection on-site and with clients.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 12+ years of post-education experience on protective relaying projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to policies.

Responsibilities

• Lead protective relaying design, relay settings, and integration with SCADA for substations, lines, generators, renewables, and distribution.
• Develop protection analyses including short-circuit, time-current coordination, arc flash, and NERC compliance.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers on client projects.
• Support data acquisition with onsite visits and discuss project specifics with clients at an appropriate technical level.
• Demonstrate knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, and NERC PRC standards; prioritize tasks and manage project schedules.
