The firm’s collaborative team works with private and public-sector clients to move projects from early planning through entitlement, permitting, design, and implementation.

For an experienced land planning professional who enjoys taking ownership of projects and wants to grow with a respected multidisciplinary firm, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while continuing to advance professionally.

Location

Burtonsville, Maryland | Greater Washington, DC Metro Area

Employment

Type: Full-Time

Compensation

$120,000–$135,000 + performance-based bonus

The Opportunity

Our client, a respected and growing multidisciplinary engineering, planning, surveying, and landscape architecture firm, is seeking an experienced Senior Landscape Architect / Land Planner – Project Manager to join its team in Burtonsville, Maryland.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced land-planning professional who understands how to advance private-sector development projects from early planning through entitlement, agency review, permitting, and approval.

The position is primarily focused on land planning, project management, entitlement processing, and agency coordination. While a background in landscape architecture is valuable, this is not a design-heavy role. The successful candidate will be comfortable working directly with clients, engineers, consultants, planning departments, and reviewing agencies while managing multiple projects throughout Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Howard Counties.

What You'll Do
  • Manage multiple private-sector land development projects from initial planning through entitlement and approval.
  • Lead the preparation and coordination of concept plans, subdivision plans, site development plans, master plans, and related entitlement submissions.
  • Interpret zoning regulations, subdivision requirements, land development ordinances, and site development standards.
  • Coordinate directly with county and municipal planning departments and other reviewing agencies.
  • Respond to agency comments and guide projects through revisions, hearings, and approvals.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams that may include civil engineers, surveyors, transportation consultants, environmental professionals, planners, and landscape architects.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, quality, and client communication.
  • Attend client meetings, agency meetings, public hearings, and planning board meetings as needed.
  • Support proposals, client relationship management, and business development efforts.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior planning and design staff.
  • What We’re Looking For
  • The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of experience in land planning, land development, landscape architecture, or a related consulting environment, with a strong track record of managing private development projects through governmental review and approval.
We’re particularly interested in candidates who have:
  • Hands-on experience with land development entitlement and permitting processes.
  • Successfully worked with local government agencies to obtain development approvals.
  • Strong knowledge of zoning, subdivision, site development, and land-use regulations.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary development teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong client communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Experience in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and/or Howard County, which is highly preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Land Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design, or a related field.
  • Professional Landscape Architect licensure (PLA/RLA) preferred; AICP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, GIS, or related software is preferred.
The Right Fit

This position is best suited for someone whose career has centered on land planning, entitlements, development approvals, and project leadership.

Candidates with a Landscape Architecture background are encouraged to apply, but the firm is specifically seeking someone with significant experience navigating the land development approval process—not someone whose experience has been primarily focused on planting design, landscape design, or construction administration.

The right person will enjoy managing complex projects, solving entitlement and regulatory challenges, building strong client and agency relationships, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

The firm offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Base salary of $120,000–$135,000, based on experience
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Professional development and continuing education support
  • Licensure and professional association support
  • Flexible work environment
  • Opportunities for advancement and long-term leadership growth
